Do you own your website and content?
I had a conversation with one of my new clients recently about their old website.  It turns out, their original web developer wrote into the contract that the developer retains all copyrights to the graphics and material displayed in the website.  The developer even owned my client's domain.

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, the web development community has a seedy underbelly.  People like this web developer trick their clients into signing deals with fine print just to lock the customer into dealing with them forever.  Let's face it, building a new brand and logo is a huge and potentially costly undertaking.  Would you leave your current developer if you could not take your logos and website with you?

Don't get locked in.  Read the fine print.  Make sure your website domain is in your name.  Make sure you have usernames and passwords for your hosting account.
